Ensure that ALL restaurants have nutrional information next to ALL items on their menus
1 read | 2 Comments
Summary:
Most people have no idea what they're eating. Being aware that most of what we eat when dining out has over 1,000 calories would help people to make better choices. This would lead to restaurants offering healthier options and taking really fatty foods off their menus. Therefore, all restaurants should be required to include nutritional information of all items on their menus. This would be a huge eye opener to people. Pamphlets on nutritional information is not enough. Most people never see those. The information needs to be obvious.

Describe your idea
Most people have no idea what they're eating. Being aware that most of what we eat when dining out has over 1,000 calories would help people to make better choices. This would lead to restaurants offering healthier options and taking really fatty foods off their menus. Therefore, all restaurants should be required to include nutritional information of all items on their menus. This would be a huge eye opener to people. Pamphlets on nutritional information is not enough. Most people never see those. The information needs to be obvious.
How do you define your "community"?
The schools, neighborhoods, churches, and businesses in my city, state, country, and throughout the world. We all need to work together to be healthier and make our world a better place.
Tell us how you think the issue of obesity is affecting your community
Most people in the US are fat while others go hungry. Fat people don't exercise because it hurts their knees, backs, etc. They are also usually depressed about their bodies so don't do much other than eat to ease their pain. This is a dangerous cycle that severely limits their ability to learn, grow, and achieve their full potential as a productive member of society. It also drastically raises medical costs as they take pain medication along with anxiety or depression medication. Ultimately their medical bills are much more expensive due to heart attack, stroke, etc and we all have to pay for that. We could save a lot of money as a community and a nation if people start taking care of themselves by exercising and eating right.
Why should your idea be selected?
My idea should be selected because people NEED to know what they're eating. Most people don't have the patience to look up food information and count calories. It's pretty obvious that if I know I'm only supposed to eat 1500 calories (for example) that if I eat a burger that has 1200 calories in it, I'm going to gain weight. By educating people and making it impossible to deny what they're eating, we can make a real difference. Statistics show that most people greatly overestimate how many calories they burn when they exercise and greatly underestimate how many calories they eat. This would help change that.
