Free Community Fitness Centers

Summary:

Gym memberships are expensive and unaffordable for most low-income families, who happen to be hit hardest by the obesity epidemic. There are not many places to walk/run outside in urban areas, and some people may not feel safe walking in their neighborhood. The Minnesota winters also make it challenging. My idea is to provide free community gyms in schools and community centers and schools (for after-hours)with workout machines and recreation equipment, so that these low-income people have a safe place to workout that won't cost them anything, as well as a place to socialize and grow their community connections. I would give tax incentives to Fitness Centers, corporations, and individuals to donate used equipment to these centers. If you go to places like Lifetime Fitness, you will notice that they always have shiny new equipment. This is where their used, older equipment can go.

Free Community Fitness Centers

Describe your idea

How do you define your "community"?

My community is my neighborhood. Neighborhoods tend to be segregated by income and people like to workout in their neighborhood, which is why this idea is focused on neighborhood communities.

Tell us how you think the issue of obesity is affecting your community

Obesity disproportionately affects low-income communities. This may be due to lack of information, lack of access to nutritious food, lack of opportunities to work out. These people can't afford gym memberships, bikes and other sporting equipment, personal trainers, and may not feel safe walking or running in their neighborhoods.

Why should your idea be selected?

It targets those that are disproportionally affected by obesity and free community fitness centers do not currently exist. It would be a relatively simple idea to excecute. Fitness also has more benefits than just reducing obesity, such as increasing self-esteem and reducing stress; which will also benefit these people.
