Summary:

With a one million dollar grant, I would donate it to a local program called Breakthrough St. Paul. This enrichment program is a branch of the national Breakthrough Program that offers St. Paul public school students a chance to take summer classes starting the summer between 6th and 7th grade, and continuing until they finish high school. This is a very competitive program with a rigorous application process. Many of the students in this program come from low income families that would otherwise have difficulty affording a college education. About 83 percent of the students that have completed Breakthrough St. Paul are the first in their families to attend college, and 100 percent of the students in this program have been accepted to college. Students from Breakthrough St. Paul have gone on to win major scholarships such as the Jack Kent Cooke, Wallin, and Gates Millennium Scholarship, as well as free rides to prestigious colleges.

There are many negative stereotypes about students who come from low income backgrounds, and this program disproves those stereotypes, and helps break down those barriers.

My plan is simple and straightforward. This program is already established, so very limited implementation is necessary. This program is mostly financed by a federal grant and individual donations, but needs to fundraising to obtain the requisite money to help the program continue. St. Paul Public Schools and Mounds Park Academy help support the program, and this grant could help defray some of those costs.

Successful St. Paul Enrichment Program For Middle School and High School Students

Give us the highlights of your idea for making Saint Paul great (2,000 characters maximum or approx. 250 words)

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

My idea is different in that instead of starting something new, this could improve an already established program. One of the benefits of this is that the money will be spent efficiently, and can be used in to support many initiatives. The approximate annual cost of academic enrichment for one student in this program is $1,800, and this grant could make the program more successful, and offer St. Paul a great opportunity to advance this initiative.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea can help make an even greater difference in St. Paul because there is a track record of success. Breakthrough St. Paul students have been helped greatly by the program, and the oldest of these students are currently freshman and sophomores in college. Without this program, some of these students would not have had a chance to attend college. Lack of opportunity can be dangerous for a city, and this program has allowed St. Paul students a great opportunity to eventually give back to St. Paul, and positively reflect on the city.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This grant could bring increased awareness to the program, as people will recognize St. Paul as a model city for helping youth who might come from difficult circumstances. In a couple of years, Breakthrough students will begin to graduate from college, and their lives will be better because of this program. These students could testify as to how the program changed their life. The founder of St. Paul’s chapter of Breakthrough started laying the groundwork for the program in 2003 as a college student, and the success of Breakthrough can inspire individuals to think big and follow their dreams.
