Restoration of Baseball Fields in St. Paul

Summary:

The City of St. Paul’s website describes St. Paul as, “the most livable city in America.” That made me think, what are some things that make a city liveable? One way to make a city more livable is by maintaining and taking care of its parks. A staple and constant at many parks across the country are baseball fields. Unfortunately, in this era of tight budgets, baseball fields are often neglected and forgotten about. Parks are extremely important to their surrounding communities, and St. Paul is no exception to this.

A drive throughout the city of St. Paul will take one by many parks, allowing one to take a look at some of the baseball fields. Some of them are beat up, have rotting fences, grass growing on the dirt, etc.

St. Paul is the birthplace of many great baseball players. It is the hometown of Joe Mauer, Paul Molitor, Jack Morris, and Dave Winfield. A major restoration of St. Paul baseball fields could lead to an increased sense of civic pride in St. Paul.

Neighborhood parks are the backbone of our communities. If the parks decay and spiral out of control, it can have dire and irreversible effects on local neighborhoods.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Many people do not think of St. Paul as a hotbed for baseball, but it has produced several great players. A restoration of baseball fields can help teach the public about the history of baseball in St. Paul.

The fields can be named after local baseball greats, and this project would allow for significant community input and implementation.

The St. Paul Saints have a long history in the city, and are slated to open a new ballpark in Downtown St. Paul in 2015. This project has the potential to be done in conjunction with that new ballpark.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

St. Paul is a city that prides itself on the quality of its parks, and parks can be the backbone and foundation of a city. Having safe and desirable parks makes St. Paul a better place to live. A relatively simple thing like the improvement of parks by restoring baseball fields can have a positive effect on the rest of the city. This could offer youth in St. Paul an opportunity to volunteer to restore the fields, and in turn gain a sense of accomplishment, and learn about park maintenance and management.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

My idea could make St. Paul a model community when it comes to restoring parks. The restored parks can be used for little league games, baseball and softball practices, kids playing a pickup game, or boy and girls playing catch with their fathers.

I have memories of playing catch with my father when I was a kid, and I want other kids to have this opportunity. Other cities could look at St. Paul, and use it as a springboard for restoring parks and baseball fields.
