Summary:

Social Media is rapidly changing the lives of people and the increased access to smartphones and laptops indicates a time of opportunity for Saint Paul to capitilize on the social media tools avaialable. My idea is to use social media to improve services to the citizens of Saint Paul by having a centralized social media plaform to improve emergency management, increase economic development, increae political engagement, and increase service delivery to the people of Saint Paul. Social media can provide information to the citizens of the city but it can also increase engagement of the community. Saint Paul could use mobile apps to provide information on snow emergency routes, progress of road construction projects, waterline breaks, or citizens could take photos of potholes and notify the city immediately where it is located so the city could respond in a more timely manner. Economic development could be increased by highlighting new businessess or business partnerships, connecting people to job opportunities of even connecting our food truck vendors to consumers though mobile applications. Other ideas include centralized online bus routes, licensing renewal mobile applications, and having city council meetings, parades, or other community activiities streamed on facebook. City events could be highlighted and discounts to these events could be also offered through the use of social media tools. My idea would be to provide information but also to engage the communnity by monitoring posts, watching trends on twitter, and listening to key themes in social media conversations to drive better services and offer responses to immediate needs of the community.

Using Social Media to Provide Service to Saint Paul

Give us the highlights of your idea for making Saint Paul great (2,000 characters maximum or approx. 250 words)

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Saint Paul is not capitalizing on the social media tools avaialble. The recent water break is an example of the database used not being efficient to reach all the citizens of Saint Paul that were impacted. The city of Saint Paul website update did not give a date of the update confusing readers who went there for the information. By using multiple social media tools in a centralized system this type of emergency information could have been more effictively communicated throughout the entire city. The technolgy exists; Saint Paul needs to THINK MOBILE and more effictively implement the tools avaialable. Once a centralized system is impmemented there is a need for daily monitoring of the tools and also a need to continually measure the results of the use of these tools.

Access to information and the potential to offer feedback will benefit the city of Saint Paul as well as the citizens who live there. Social Media as a Service is and idea that can offer a public forum for citizen concerns, increase political engagement, increase economic development and improve our emergency managament system. This idea will connect comsumers and providers more effectively than is currently being done. Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The centralized social media provider will always need staff to maintain, monitor and measure the use of social media tools and to stay current on the quickly changing technology. However, the cost of social media monitoring tools are often free or are available for a low fee. To generate revenue, some of the mobile apps could have a fee for their use, others could be provided for free depending on the nature of the application. Businesses who want to market their services could pay a fee to be highlighted in the centralized system. 100 words or 800 characters
