Summary:

A Million Reasons to Hire US in St. Paul MN!

As a person over 50 I know how hard it is to compete with a 30 year old for a job. And the fact that a 25 yr old is probably screening resumes or conducting the interview makes it a double whammy.

I want to use this grant to offer 200 Tax Exempt checks of $5000 each to companies in St Paul that will hire a job seeker who is over 50. I would like to see the State of MN keep this program alive also and include a tax rebate for the entire state in the future.

The requirements would be:

•The job seeker must be 50 or older.
•The jobseeker was or is collecting Unemployment.
•The job must be permanent.
•It must be Full Time and pay at least $12.00 per hour.
•The employee must remain in this job for at least 6 months in order for the company to receive their incentive TAX EXEMPT check.

We might be overqualified. We might have grey hair. We might not be able to text as fast as an 18 yr old.....But, we are healthy. We have a strong work ethic. We have common sense that can only come through years of experience. And most of all, we WANT to work.

It’s just that simple.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Well, no ones seems to care about my age group when it comes to unemployment and finding jobs. We are swept under the carpet in my opinion. I don't know what other people suggested, I only know what I am passionate about and that is that people over 50 find jobs! Especially people whose unemployment has run out, who have lost their homes or have lost their family even....This is a serious problem and I know it firsthand as I was evicted and homeless for 5 months, due to my unemployment running out and not being able to live on minimum wage.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I know the winner will get a big article in the Pioneer Press and hopefully even the Star Trib. If I won I hope our State politicians and Governor will take notice of this problem. I want St. Paul to take a stand and say "this is a PROBLEM" and this needs to be made public and 200 new jobs will take 200 people off the welfare line hopefully. I hope people in the US will see St. Paul as an example for the whole USA as this problem exists in other big cities. I don't want this to end after a year, I want ST. Paul and the state to help people whose unemployment has run out and can't get hired do to age. If this is not a fact, why do the Counties and private companies ask our ages on applications. Are you over 40? really? We are not even making off the printer!!

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I want companies and the public to realize that maybe a 25 yr old is not the best person to be screening applications and interviewing them. I also want ALL reference to age on any and all online applications REMOVED--Hennepin County is one of the biggest offenders I might add. I also want questions like "Are you over 40" made illegal. I don't see online applications asking "Are you a Muslim" or "Are you a Christian" so why should any reference to age be allowed? I have addressed this with the Governors office and the girl said "UH, UM, Well they need to know if you are old enough to work"....her exact words and her age my guess was very under 50.
