Summary:

Row Saint Paul is a program designed to empower kids from under-resourced communities in the Twin Cities to build confidence, achieve academic success, and create healthy habits through the sport of rowing. This program would allow kids an opportunity to learn and compete in a sport where they are traditionally underrepresented. Rowing has the unique ability to build self confidence, teamwork, and motivation on the water and in the classroom. Row Saint Paul will provide a safe after school environment for teens from places like Dayton's Bluff, North Minneapolis, and Frogtown. The program will empower teens to be successful after high school and provide scholarship opportunities for college.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Rowing is a sport that has existed in the Twin Cities since the 1870s yet very people know about the sport. Rowing is unique in the level of dedication and teamwork required to be successful. This program will teach kids how to strive for excellence on the water and to apply these skills in the classroom and throughout their lives. Community rowing programs exist all over the country and have helped people become healthier and more motivated on and off the water. Row Saint Paul is not a new idea, it's actually based off of a very successful program called Row New York, which started over ten years ago with the same mission. I want to take their idea and build a similar program here in Saint Paul with the help of the Minnesota Boat Club.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Row Saint Paul will empower teens from neighborhoods like Dayton's Bluff and Frogtown to develop the skills necessary to be successful in high school and beyond. Striving for excellence on the water will help motivate students in the classroom. Graduates of the program may be eligible for scholarships as many colleges and universities look for students from diverse backgrounds who are motivated and willing to work for things greater than themselves. Row New York has had enormous success with 99% of their year-round graduates going on to college, the majority of them on scholarships.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Row New York has had enormous success over their ten year history of empowering girls and boys on the water and in the classroom. I want to build a similar program here in the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Boat Club has been looking to start a program like this but funding for such a program is hard to come by. MBC is very excited to oversee the program here in St Paul as its juniors program has a long history of building excellent rowers and even a few olympians. Youth and community rowing programs are growing across the country and this program will be unique in that very few programs are designed to help under-resourced members of the community. This program is community and kid-oriented, has the ability to change kids lives, and there is an organization willing and ready to help.
