St. Paul Scholars

Summary:

These funds could be used to begin a summer internship program for 10-20 high school students to conduct research on the issues facing the community (local policies, housing issues, healthcare, and education). They would be mentored by college students and at the end of the summer present their research to the community and later to the State legislator and city council. The mentors would ideally have completed the program prior to becoming mentors (not possible first year). This would be overseen by 1-2 Staff members and the executive director. Prior to the research, there would be an intensive after school training to learn about the history of their communities, political process and issues facing their communities. The interns will be paid above minimum wage and required to maintain a professional attitude and conduct community service.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I think this gives an opportunity for students to gain professional educational experience prepping them for college, learn more, give back to their community, and meet other young leaders within their area. It would also be an option for students to earn income and learn at the same time while also providing personal and professional growth.

This Entry is about (Issues)

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Getting students educated and invested in their community will help them want to remain in it or return to their community later in their lives and help them improve their community, have more respect and love for their community. This experience will also allow to take the skills learned and improve additional communities they are apart of or will be apart of in their future.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I think having youth learn and educate the community about issues in St. Paul will alert the community to the issues and take a new perspective and opportunity to learn from these young leaders.
