Summary:
My idea can help people create connections, add visual appeal to a place or space, build pride in your neighborhood and improve public spaces.
My idea is to show history that is relevant and impact-full. Display historic pictures in neighborhoods of the neighborhoods. Maybe it is the street cars on Selby or a parade on Grand. People could look at the large picture and then turn and see right where it happened. They can see how the neighborhood has changed and grown. The history would be right in front of them, real. These could be on bus shelters, the side of buildings, special plaque, where ever there is a spot to put a photograph.
For each one put up a small neighborhood gathering can take place. Maybe a speaker would talk about the significance of the specific neighborhood or building (what ever the subject matter) and also about what community means. Neighbors would have a chance to meet, young and old. To share stories and learn.

My idea can help people create connections, add visual appeal to a place or space, build pride in your neighborhood and improve public spaces.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
Historical markers exist. They are interesting, but St. Paul has so few for how rich and interesting the history is. Maybe not every neighborhood deserves a huge bronze statue, but they could have a large picture or poster. Plaques are nice, but they are just words. Seeing an image is powerful. Especially when you are standing in the spot the picture was taken.

History is accessible for people that seek it out. Those are not the people this will touch as much. This is aimed more at the people in the community that do not know their city as much as they maybe should. Learning more and understanding your community is a pathway to respecting and taking pride in it. My theory is that with these small shrines of history it will get people talking. Stories will be shared and generations will be brought together by these unique neighborhood histories.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
Glimpse of the past could easily be implemented into any other community. Every community and neighborhood has history. Most have some sort of visual record of it as well. All that is needed is a picture, map or drawing with a brief explanation and a place to hang or post it.
It will be remembered because it is right in front of you, it is interesting, it is unique to that exact location.
