Summary:

MAIC It Happen! All children deserve the best we have to offer! What makes St Paul such a great city is the fact that we care about and invest in our children. The beautiful cultural fabric of our St Paul community is among the many priceless gifts we have to offer as well as being our strongest asset. In order for St Paul to continue to be a city that creates a world class constituency, it is necessary to invest in the foundational years that start our children a step ahead. The Montessori American Indian Center (MAIC) It Happen will work to weave the old and the new to build and invest in a stronger future for all children by using the 100 year old proven Montessori Method and blending it with the even older culture and language of the original peoples, the American Indian community. Creating total readers is only one of the amazing things that children can achieve by six, yet we do not provide this type of access for all children. To strengthen the weave of our beautiful cultural fabric, we must better understand how to provide opportunities so that every child can realize the potential that exists within by creating access to the very opportunity that has been producing high outcomes for ‘privileged’ children for years. All children are worthy of the investment and deserve the same access to early childhood programming. It’s time to change that and MAIC It Happen!

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

A Montessori American Indian Center will make a difference. It will be the first of its kind anywhere in the United States and has the potential to become a national model of a cutting edge revolution in early childhood education. By including language and culture as an integral part of the Montessori method, the momentum created will launch American Indian children past the multiple obstacles that keep them among the lowest achieving communities in all of St Paul. It starts by creating access to the model that has launched so many other children for generations now.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

MAIC It Happen will eliminate the achievement gap even before it has been measured. American Indian students have one of the highest achievement gaps and drop-out rates of all communities. Access to early childhood opportunities are severely limited and very few American Indian children come to Kindergarten prepared. With a waiting list of over 500 children for Head Start programming in Ramsey County, very few American Indian children have any opportunity for early childhood programming. A Montessori American Indian Center will serve American Indian children, an opportunity so sorely needed. The work has already begun and only a location is needed! A million dollars from the St Paul Challenge will provide for the location and seed the opportunity for years to come.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

That’s the beauty of this idea, it is completely replicable and nearly ready to go, only a location needs to be secured! The MAIC is a partnership being initiated with the support of a national expert located in St Paul - the Montessori Training Center of MN. Their effort to bring the method to underprivileged children is what makes this idea inspiring. It’s expandable for more children! The true beauty of the MAIC will be the amazing children as they enter the K-12 system, they will immediately shine in their abilities to be independent, problem solvers who are socially prepared to share and lead. They will be prepared to be actively engaged in their love of learning - reading, writing and doing mathematics at a level above many of their peers of the same age.
