"Family Fun For Everyone",

Summary:

My idea revolves around the theme of "Family Fun For Everyone", promoting St Paul as a place to bring the family for a wide variety of ongoing street and park events, such as:

Puppeteers
Musicians
Artists
Children's games in the parks
Storytellers in the parks
Petting Zoo in the park
Downtown Children's Playground
Cultural Themes each weekend
Weekend parades
Walk about characters: Snoopy, Goldie Gopher, Bullwinkle, etc.
Birthday Parties in the Park
Wedding Chapel in the Park
Standing Arts & Crafts Fair along the riverfront Fireworks Saturday nights

Note: No ONE "monumental" event; rather, a propourri of small events and food booths, providing a variety of entertainment throughout the downtown area. Local brick and mortar businesses should be given first dibs on offering street vendor services (e.g., selling their items on the street). The downtown would be mapped out with location codes to regulate who is where and when.

Offer mini-trolley transportation, encouraging "park & ride" locations and then taking visitors around town via a "pass" for transportation, including the historic St Paul Depot, Harriet Island, etc.

Publish a weekly calendar of events in the St Paul Pioneer Press, with a map showing who is where and when.

In the winter, cater to snow and ice activities and move some events indoors to various locations. Maybe a "sleigh ride" for transportation around town.

Required: An event coordinator

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea speaks to the image of St Paul as being a "family friendly" place to visit and have fun. The uniqueness of multiple locations for a wide variety of activities, no one of which would overwhelm the setting, provides a "walk around town" opportunity for families.

Few cities take this approach, preferring to focus on large events which create other problems. St Paul already has the Xcel Center and the Science Museum for major events. The idea of a "Family Fun for Everyone" theme gets people spread out throughout the downtown area.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea, over time, will change the image of downtown St Paul as a place for families to go to. Think of how families plan to go to DisneyWorld, expecting a variety of activities. This is a similar mindset to strive for. Compare this image of downtown with that of Minneapolis where there is little or no thought toward families. Even when going to a ballgame, one has to be wary of their surroundings and potential concerns. People don't think of Minneapolis as a place to take their children. Wouldn't it be nice to create that image with St Paul?

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

There is an unmet need for "family events". Once you cultivate the image and create an ongoing family environment in the downtown St Paul area, the word will spread. Of course, marketing this locally will also be necessary.

Other communities have done something like this on a limited basis. Anchorage, Alaska, for example, has a community activities courtyard where music and arts events run fairly continuously. They also have an arts & crafts fair that runs all summer.
