Summary:

A Christmas market, also known as Christkindlmarkt or Weihnachtsmarkt, is an open-air wintertime market taking place in the weeks leading up to Christmas. These markets originated in Germany but are now being held in many other countries, and even in Chicago.

The annual open-air event during the holiday season is set up as a little European village of timber houses, which are lit in the evening to create a festive glow for shoppers. The market is often set in the town square as a festive and alluring attraction. Popular attractions at the market include German-influenced wares and foods, as well as unique gifts. Toasted almonds, traditional gingerbread, and hot mulled wine help stave off the cold winter air. The unique shopping experience, typical German food and drinks, as well as diverse holiday entertainment make the Christmas market a beloved annual destination. Admission is free.

Chicago boasts the only major Christmas market in the Midwest. Bringing cherished European tradition and charm, Christkindlmarket Chicago has become a staple event on Daley Plaza, and has grown to become one of the most popular winter attractions in the heart of the city.

With its beautiful, historic buildings and “town square” setting in downtown St. Paul, Rice Park offers the perfect backdrop for a Christmas market. A St. Paul Christmas Market has the potential to become a hallmark event for the city, expanding the offering of winter-time outdoor festivities while providing for economic opportunity and drawing visitors to the capitol city.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The idea of an Open Air Christmas Market, while based in a centuries old European tradition, is new to St. Paul and to Minnesota. While residents of other northern locales (including Stockholm and Helsinki) enjoy the offerings of an outdoor holiday market, this would be a new and exciting addition to the cultural landscape of St. Paul, and has the potential to draw visitors from throughout the state and beyond. Part cultural event, part festival, part economic growth opportunity, the Open Air Christmas Market would bring a new twist to the idea of "winter fun" in St. Paul.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The Open Air Chrismas Market is a FREE event. What a wonderful way to encourage St. Paulites to enjoy the beauty of downtown St. Paul, gather with family and friends in a spectacular outdoor setting, find unique and wonderful gifts, and support the vendors who would sell their wares at the Market.
