Outdoor Racquetball Courts!!

Summary:

I have lived in MN for over 8 years now and have grown to appreciate the land of 9,999 outdoor activities ranging from snow shoeing to paddle boarding to kick ball but something was always missing, that 10,000 activity. The past few summers it occurred to me what that activity was, my beloved outdoor racquetball court. There is a beautiful site in 4 slabs of concrete and one foundation that easily create 4 outdoor racquetball courts. It is breathtaking. I look forward to calling Saint Paul my home after having lived here as long as I have yet something is missing, my outdoor racquetball courts.

Beyond myself, what a lovely opportunity to provide courts to those who are unable to afford the fancy gym membership fees where these hidden gems reside. Gyms encompass a stigma that I myself have shied away from which include pressures of maintaining the scultped body or having the right gym clothes or simple embarrassment of not knowing the unspoken rules of the gym. How nice it would be to throw some shoes on, walk down the block and hit a couple games with family or friends. No bureaucratic gym membership to deal with, just you, concrete, racket, a blue ball and love for the game.

Some may wonder how this would work. I can attest to living in a community that had outdoor racquetball courts and they were continually in use! No ceiling or back wall needed. Do balls fly over to the other court, sure, but in the process you might strike up a conversation with a fellow racquetballer, make a new friend who invites you rowing over the next weekend, all thanks to our outdoor racquetball courts.

Lastly, outdoor racquetball courts provide us with the ever so needed vitamin D that must be soaked to it's fullest in summer months here in MN and that ever glorious FRESH AIR. These among many things are what outdoor racquetball courts could do for Saint Paul, so let's take them back form the gyms and give them back to the community where they belong!

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I am new to this but I would like to think that no one has thought of outdoor racquetball courts because those who play it are privilaged enough to enjoy a gym membership and those who have never heard of it have never been given the opportunity to set foot on a court.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I am a social worker who lives in the Rondo area and have worked with youth in that area. I have seen what an impact the Jimmy Lee Community Center has made on the youth in the area. How it has disguised getting healthy in the form of haivng a place to play and interact with their neighbors, feel a sense of connection in an area that so desperately needs to feel connected.

Concrete lasts for a very long time with little maintenance needed.
