Summary:

City Stay works to make St. Paul great by sparking and developing unlikely connections across the dividing lines of our community. As a summer program, City Stay provides high school students of all backgrounds with a new understanding of St. Paul by facilitating homestays with carefully matched, local immigrant families in the Somali, Latino, or Hmong communities. During the day, students take classes covering their host family's language and culture. To compliment this coursework, City Stay brings in guest speakers and takes students on field trips that further enhance their understanding of the immigrant communities in the Twin Cities. Students also develop a project or internship that connects them to their new community. During the evenings and weekends, students spend time with their host families. Students join in on daily activities such as cooking meals and attending community gatherings. Host families share their cultural traditions and daily routines with their student, while simultaneously learning about their students’ backgrounds. Together these experiences aim to provide both students and host families with a new perspective on the Twin Cities.
By forming meaningful relationships across cultural, racial, ethnic, and geographic lines, City Stay works to make St. Paul a united city that recognizes and embraces the strengths of our diverse population. Each demographic of St. Paul has traditions, stories, and knowledge that should be valued and shared. City Stay starts the conservations that enable all voices to be heard. In order to make the most positive impact on our community, however, people from all backgrounds need to be included in City Stay. The broad and diverse nature of City Stay makes it difficult to implement to its full capacity with limited resources and funding. Our idea is strong and well conceived. In order to turn thought into action City Stay needs the resources to reach out and connect with St. Paul’s greater community.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

From our research, City Stay is truly a unique idea. Currently no other local cross-cultural homestay program exists in the US. By adapting the more traditional study abroad model and applying it to one’s own city, City Stay embodies innovation. St. Paul would be the first city to support this original approach to cross-cultural, experiential learning and could become a model for other cities in the future.
Additionally, City Stay combines a number of distinctive teaching strategies that facilitate deep learning and encourage civic engagement. Cultural and language immersion, service-learning, community involvement, and field trips, as well as class discussions and written assignments provide students with a variety of tools that will be applicable to future endeavors.
