Aquaponics Urban Farming

Summary:

It's hard to eat locally grown produce - especially with our long winters, ie short growing season. Aquaponic farming enables us to sustainably grow year-round in our climate - and produce not only veggies and fruits, but also fish (perch and talipia). An aquaponics center would not only increase local, sustainable food production, but also create jobs, educate students, farmers, and consumers. An aquaponics center would bring foodies, farmers, fishers together - all of which are abundant in St. Paul.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Food justice issues have gotten a lot of attention recently, but most backyard and community garden programs are difficult to scale up and don't create jobs. Aquaponics also produces vegetables and fish. An aquaponics center could produce enough for wide distribution and create green jobs.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Farming, in particular, urban farming, has to be innovative and sustainable, while considering production yeild/land use. I envision St. Paul with a dramatically different supply mix of locally grown, organic food resources, improved diet and health via consumption of fresh fish and produce, and green jobs.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The science of aquaponics is cutting edge - interesting as a production model and applied science/technology. Not all future jobs have to be electronic tech products. This gets to St Paul's values around conservation/sustainability, our agricultural history and innovation in urban populations.
