Summary:

I propose to facilitate the opening of a Cafe in Saint Paul to be owned and run by a cooperative whose membership is composed of low income Saint Paul residents who are aspiring urban farmers along with low income coffee cultivators from Colombia who are members of the coffee cultivators collective named Minga de Sueño. The Cafe would be an income generating enterprise the profits of which would support an evolving partnership between low income food producers in Saint Paul and southern Colombia.

Minga de Sueño is an association of Colombian campesinos (low income peasant farmers) who work together to build their individual and collective capacity. Through a partnership with the Fundación Social (a large, very well respected Colombian foundation) in Colombia, we have worked with Minga de Sueño to increase their capacity to do technical assistance with thier membership on various aspects of coffee cultuvation and marketing. We have facilitated the sale of their coffee to a Saint Paul based specialty coffee importer and brought some Minga members to Saint Paul to learn about the coffee market here.

I think there is tremendous potential for people from Saint Paul and Colombia to engage in an interchange and partnership that will be extremely beneficial and advantagous for both. The cafe could be the first of many enterprises that could be developed by the cooperative.

I am proposing a Cafe as the first enterprise because I think we could operate a very successful business which could support the exchange program and lead to further success. Minga de Sueño has extensive experience in small scale agriculture and running small producer cooperatives. They have a model of personal and collective capacity bui;lding that would be wonderful to introduce to Saint Paul. I think an exchange program between low income residents of Saint Paul and Colombian campesinos would create all sorts of innovative social and economic activity here and in Colombia!

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

While intercultural exchanges are fairly common, I believe there have been few exchanges between low income food producing comminities. I believe residents of Saint Paul who are exploring urban agriculture and members of Minga de Sueño have a tremendous potential to learn from each other and to together come up with solutions for problems they face both here in Saint Paul and in Colombia. In a time when globalization is impacting food production all across the planet it will be beneficial to be more globally connected.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The Cooperative I propose will be able to create for-profit edterprises related to local, sustainable food production in Saint Paul and in Nariño, Colombia. The cultural interchange between Saint paul and Colombia will be educational and enriching to both. I believe such a partnership will spawn endeavors that would not have otherwise occured.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I believe the Cafe would be immedictely successful. I believe a large number of people would be attracted to a Cafe where the baristas were coffee growers from Colombia and new food producers from Saint Paul. There are lots of coffee shops, but I think the novelty of a Coop with coffee producers and urban agriculturalists, along with a great coffee shop, would be successful.
