Urban Tennis Center - Playing it Forward - Securing the Future

Summary:

Saint Paul Urban Tennis (SPUT) needs a permanent home to provide year-round programming and to develop a leadership academy for young people that will enhance its nationally acclaimed tennis and life skills program. I see a year-round leadership program that would enroll candidates, ages 14-17, who upon graduation could become paid SPUT instructors. The candidates would receive scholarships for regular SPUT programming, get on the job experience assisting veteran instructors, and connect to future careers through mentors in our community. With an aging population, a city-based tennis and education center to house this academy would provide not only opportunities for the youth of St. Paul but a vehicle for engaging baby boomers in a healthy lifestyle and rewarding volunteer opportunities as they enter retirement.

Imagine! For 21 years, SPUT has drawn thousands of kids from every background to tennis courts in neighborhoods across the city. Last year alone, 3,000 kids ages 5-17 learned to hit forehands and backhands, enjoyed a reading enrichment program and learned about nutrition, exercise and good sportsmanship. SPUT S-P-I-R-I-T came alive as they learned the importance of: S (service), P (perseverance), I (integrity), R (responsibility), I (imagination) and T (teamwork) from their instructors. This happened for eight wonderful weeks during the summer months. Imagine the possibilities through year-round contact with our youth!

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

There are no public indoor tennis courts in the city of St. Paul and only one private facility. There is a great need for a recreational center that houses indoor courts to provide a place for people of all ages to unite on the tennis court and to engage in a healthy lifestyle. This fact and the unique concept of an instructor academy demonstrate innovation. This idea is the ultimate recycling program. This academy will take the best students from a nationally acclaimed program and recycle them in the same program as coaches while preparing them for long-lasting careers off the court. If there is a better use for the most important resource in Saint Paul – our young people – I cannot imagine what it is.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

SPUT academy graduates will influence thousands of youngsters through coaching and teaching. They will motivate, challenge and enrich their students in the summer, winter and extended play programs each year. The impact of a facility would extend to the entire St. Paul and greater East Metro community.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

There has been talk for years regarding a public tennis and education facility in the city but in order to make it a reality, a donation is needed as a catalyst to realize the dream. There are partners who would sustain this idea and provide the extra support needed to carry out this idea into the future. Having an adjunct instructor academy will provide an essential resource, instructors for SPUT as it continues to grow. In addition, this concept of an instructor academy will have an enormous appeal for other youth programs in Minnesota. SPUT will be eager to share best practices with others and to collaborate to make the idea even better.
