Summary:

I think Saint Paul would be made GREAT by making it the EDIBLE GREEN CITY in the USA by planting fruit trees, gardens with veggies, herbs and fruits. This would not only be for neighborhoods with individual gardens, but would engage state government with their properties, all other areas of government including parks, playgrounds, schools, colleges and universities. It would be for businesses large or small, groups like Boy and Girl Scouts, fraternal organizations as well as churches & charities. No neighborhood or group would be excluded.
The money would be for everything needed such as greenhouses, fencing, lumber, planting equipment both commercial and for household use, garden equipment, fruit trees, plants, seeds, black dirt, fertilizers and some labor. It could be as expansive as the total money for the project would allow.
A large proven nursery could administer it with the assistance of the U of M Farm Campus.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This is different than just planting gardens as well as that is, as it involves the entire city. Apartment residents could do container gardening. Portions of lawns could be changed into edible plantings. Produce could be used by the owners or processed for later use, sold at Farmes' Markets, for food shelves, charities or individuals in need. Reducing grass would save on water & give food in exchange.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Youth would be involved, keeping them out of gangs, with learning which could lead to employment. Hmong farmers benefit with ethnic plantings as well as other truck gardeners. With fruit trees and spring blossoms everywhere, with our own Honey Crisp Apple and other fruits for our climate & Saint Paul could rival Washington D.C. & Japan as a spring tourist attraction.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Seeing a large city like Saint Paul do this would inspire the whole state and beyond to do the same. Planting a goodly amount of quite mature fruit trees at first would give Saint Paul the blossoms and fruit early on, visible along roadways and everywhere. Adding to them each year would
make them increasingly more visible over the years. Memorial gift ideas for more trees and replacements could be picked up by the media.
Huge grass lawns like some businesses have could be used for tree and divers plantings, savings water. Rain barrel type irrigation could be used without depleting our critical water supply. The whole thing would be: "how can we enlarge it - making it more efficient and better"!
