Summary:

In order to close the achievement gap and ensure that our children can have the brightest future possible, we need to improve our schools. One thing that has been hindering the growth of our schools and our children is funding. Every year we hear about school funding being cut. How can we provide a better future for our kids when we are not investing our future leaders?

My idea is to create a grassroots organizing campaign. First we start with a pilot project in two schools. We will need an organizer with a diverse background in each schools to organize parents, teachers, students, school officials, and politicians to fight for funding for our schools. The organizers will report back to each other to ensure that their efforts are in unison.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Now that the school systems are neighborhood based, we will not only be organizing around the school, but we will be organizing the community. Everyone has a stake in their children's education from the parents to the teachers. Once we organize everybody around the issue, we take the fight to the capitol.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

When we win the fight for a brighter future, the parents and teachers will have gained leadership skills and a strong network of neighbors and officials. Now they can go on and organize for other issues that they might have. We will not only give the children a brighter future, we will ensure that the parents have what they need to fight for what they believe in.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Recognizing and remember my idea will not be hard. The impact of my project will be the people, once we win the fight for the first two schools, the project will be replicated in all other schools in St. Paul. The people affected by my project will have the tools they need to do similar work in their community.
