Summary:

Use the old St. Paul Depot building in Bruce Vento Park for an Artist's Retreat House and Mentor Center. Invite mid career/accomplished artists in any medium, both local and world wide, to be inspired and to inspire others in this beautiful reserve aside our bustling city. 20 rooms,(?) community dinner provided daily,(we'll need a kitchen)a guest refrigerator and microwave, shower rooms, a fireside room where artist meet (the beginning of the week for introductions and end of week to share their experience and their work) Invite pro-Bono, a special big gun once a month who will provide a showing of his/her work to other guests and mentee's.
Ah, the mentee's. Each artist staying at the retreat will agree to meet for one 4 hour session with an emerging artist in the area to discuss, inspire and work alongside. I see easels, sculpture and music on the grounds in the spring, fall and summertime!Invite the public(per ticket sales)for a quarterly exhibit or performance AND have a weekly open house- tea and cookies in the fireside room for a chat with guests and an opportunity to purchase/commission art!!
Selection of artists: Easy! Super cheap rate of $200 bucks a week covers all. They will come. Ask for submissions and have a panel of folks select. Transportation is all theirs- other than maybe our own airport shuttle. Selection of mentee's: Easy!Open to all St. Paul residents who have proven emergent status, including the students of our creative arts high schools and colleges. Ask then to submit, and have same panel of folks select participants, pairing them with artist guests.
20 guest artist's @ $200 a week = $1600 month revenue. The rest will have to come from some other source. We'll find funding:) Hire a live-on-site host or host team to cook, clean, concierge and assist with organizing special events there. What an exciting place this would be! Put St. Paul on the map with the countries FIRST of it's kind artist's Retreat and Mentor Center.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

St. Paul, the countries best kept secret, has been second to Mpls in the arts forever. We struggle to live up, when in reality, we are just different. THIS is different! Not about making the scene as much as making a lasting mark, building an inclusive and accessible community and creating a powerful stir in this already thriving artist community.
We thrive in being welcoming, an easy place to land for rejuvenation of the spirit. Fitting then to rejuvenate this priceless sight filled with history, from American Indians, to Irish and Swedish settlers. Set on a beautiful reserve with trains, planes and riverboats cruising by, it will draw attention and reach audiences and travelers from around the country, and even the world, who will come and experience out great city and pass it on.

This Entry is about (Issues)

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Pairing traveling artists with local emerging artists will create a broadening of knowledge and pure inspiration. Our city's mentee's will learn about other places and ways of working and thinking. Our guests will discover our city and connect with our art community. The St. Paul community at large will have opportunities to experience up close the beauty of artists working in partnership to bring new ideas and concepts to our city. The BEST thing is that those stopping by the Nature Reserve will literally trip over this amazing and active retreat center, peaking their curiosity and interest in the arts, possibly turning non art appreciators into art enthusiasts!

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This retreat and mentor center for the arts will serve many generations of upcoming St. Paul artists. There will be a perpetual buzz as long as we perpetually have people living in the city. Traveling artists will certainly be inspired, looking for sites in their home towns to create an arts center based on this model.
