Summary:

If I were given one million dollars I would provide low-income families and senior living facilities with access to fresh fruits and vegetables through building green houses and creating greenhouse space attached to their homes. Many senior citizens and low-income families just don’t have access to fresh fruit and vegetables. If they are committed to eating healthy they have to make difficult choices prioritizing between paying for fresh fruits and vegetables and paying their bills. Using public transportation to grocery stores in addition to the high cost of gas also factors in as well and cost efficient grocery stores are not located in their area of residence. With a greenhouse attached to their homes, poor seniors who are on fixed incomes and poor growing families who are on a strict budgets could grow their own fresh fruits and vegetables year-round, thus, saving money on food and transportation. The agricultural process would be an educational experience for children. They would learn to grow their own foods, make healthy choices and save money as well. This idea would create a sense of community that would cross age and cultural divides as well. Families, Seniors and people from various ethnicity could get to know their neighbors through trading or selling various item they grow in their green houses throughout the year for extra income. This idea can even be used in apartment buildings as well as single households.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

What makes my idea different is that in a completely new and unique way it builds upon the wonderful idea our First Lady Michelle Obama has been promoting which is making healthy choices. It brings the idea home in a literal way since people would be growing food in their own personal green house attached to their home. The idea of community gardens is often used in inner city communities but that involves time away from home and long walks or having to arrange transportation to the gardens. Minnesota has unpredictable weather. Having a greenhouse attached to your home gives year around instant access to your garden saving time and money.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I believe my idea will make a difference in Saint Paul because it helps families save time, money and promotes healthy choices. Greenhouses attached to resident’s home let’s families and friends spend more time together. This is a way the city can help give people a sense of dignity and self-worth without crushing the spirit of a person and shaming them through lack of access to inexpensive healthy food. Having access to healthy fruits and vegetables closes that divide. After all who wouldn't want a greenhouse in their home? How cool.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I believe Saint Paul can be on the cutting edge of something great if this idea is implemented. I believe that other cities within our state and around the United States could easily incorporate these ideas within their cities to help people who do not have easy access to inexpensive healthy food. I believe this idea unites the rich and poor and creates an even playing field. What is so great about this idea is that Saint Paul can be the leader in this literally green idea. This forward thinking idea can be implemented absolutely anywhere.
