Summary:

As a place on "The Great River", the settlement of Saint Paul brought roads - first rail; then many others, through and the city. With roads came people. Some, according to my aunts who diligently lectured me when I was small, got off the boat and walked along the railroad tracks; working for as they could and picking up bread and beer for their journey until they came to the promising Midwest. Here they got jobs with anybody who would hire them. They would cut 3-foot wide strips of sod and raised windowless huts. Walls were 3-feet thick and single (covered) chimneys, and solid wooden doors and uncovered floors and single stoves for cooking and heating either from suppliers and blacksmith constituted the single appliance in the house.

The spirit of hard work lives on in Saint Paul and may be seen in many smiling people... see attachment for an example of a possibly universal person with practically universal smile working hard in Saint Paul.
