Summary:

As Minnesotans, we are known for placing value on our natural resources and taking pride in our cultural heritage. The city of St. Paul has over 4500 acres of parklands, of which Battle Creek Park comprises almost half. We propose an outdoor center at Battle Creek Regional Park – The St. Paul Center for Active Living - where people can get connected with the outdoors and encounter a gateway to a healthy, active lifestyle. The Center will encourage and support the St. Paul community to lead a lifestyle more integrated with the natural world. The many trails at Battle Creek will be used as a tool to promote numerous activities such as hiking, running, cross-country skiing, mountain biking and many more. Educational programs will encourage children to explore the realms of science, ecology, and creative thinking. It will be an outdoor gym; one that seamlessly incorporates nature and active living into the lifestyles of St. Paul citizens.
The Outdoor Center itself will be a sustainable, LEED-Certified building to further encourage green living for all present and future generations. Classrooms will harbor educational and active living classes to help everyone achieve their goals and learn more about sustainable living. A green roof will incorporate vegetable and herb gardens available to the community, while saving energy costs. The Center will provide a medium for social interaction, access to equipment, changing facilities, education opportunities, and a launch point for events – truly a gateway to facilitate interaction between people and nature.

GET OUT & GO ST. PAUL!

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

As many ideas may look to simply benefit music, the arts, or science, this proposal will create a cultural movement toward leading a more active lifestyle. This unique idea incorporates the community with one of St. Paul’s already existing wild places to create a cohesive link between the people and the parks, whilst being an integral piece of improving public health. The entire population will benefit from this idea - not just a small group of like-minded individuals. It can also be utilized year-round, not just during the summer months. While many people experience seasonal depression, the Outdoor Center will encourage citizens to take advantage of the many outdoor activities that can still be done in the winter.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the cost of obesity in 2006 was $2.8 billion across the state, and this number is only expected to rise. The most vital aspect of the Outdoor Center will be its ability to initiate a shift in the way St. Paul citizens stay active while developing a stronger relationship with the outside world. It will demonstrate how an outdoor, active lifestyle can improve physical, mental, and spiritual health in the same setting. The community will become more engaged with St. Paul’s parks and take a greater interest in sustainable practices that will last for generations.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

For years to come, people will associate Battle Creek Park as the launching pad for an active lifestyle because of the Outdoor Center. As the community becomes more involved with the park, levels of obesity and depression will decrease while a passionate concern for the environment will evolve. Children will become exposed to nature at an early age, developing an interest and appreciation for science. As the world becomes increasingly wired, the Outdoor Center will provide an ever-important link between people and their environment, providing a model for other major cities to improve the quality of life.
