Greening Saint Paul - Growing Together
Summary:
Saint Paul is a big city that feels like a small town. It's know as a "City of Neighborhoods." We care about our neighbors and our environment. With one million dollars, I would like to increase that feeling of neighborliness, caring, and environmental responsibility in Saint Paul by providing funds and resources to create more community gardens, green space, and garden based youth development programs.
Gardening helps us renew our relationship to the land and each other while we get the benefits of fresh vegetables and fruits, fresh air, and exercise. Gardens increase the beauty of the city and can be places to gather for celebrations, festivals and music. Community gardens are natural places for younger children to learn about planning, patience, and dedication as well as math, reading, and the environment. Teen youth development programs based on farm to market practices help foster business entrepreneurship, responsibility and teamwork as well as friendship for kids in after school programs. Also food shelves would greatly benefit from extra vegetables from the gardens. Neighbors can get to know neighbors while working in adjoining garden plots.

Urban agriculture and organic gardening are growing trends in Saint Paul and throughout the country. This proposal for Greening Saint Paul - Growing Together is unique because it would take advantage of the strong grassroots movement that is already in place and growing. It would provide funding and resources to promote programs that are already in place or developing and help them grow to a point where it becomes a source of city pride. Saint Paul can be on the forefront of urban agriculture and a source of inspiration to other cities. It will succeed and be self sustaining now and into the future because of all the people who believe in sustainable, environmental practices and need and want access to fresh food and nature.
