Saint Paul Mean Time

Summary:

The one million dollars will fund extensive education, lobbying, and public relations efforts to accomplish the relocation of the prime meridian. It will be an audacious self-promotional effort of unbridled civic jingoism!

Well, why not? Latitude is a function of the rotation of the earth around its axis. Longitude, however, has been and can be moved around. The location of the prime meridian is arbitrary.

Centuries ago sailors referred to longitude as so many degrees east or west of their home ports. Later nations established their own prime meridians. In 1884 at the International Meridian Conference held in Washington, DC, 22 countries voted to adopt the Greenwich meridian as the prime meridian of the world (the French continued to use Paris as their prime meridian until 1911).

In the 19th century the British were dominant; they possessed an empire and their navy ruled the seas. They got the prime meridian. The 20th century was the American century and we continue to be the world’s sole superpower. It is our turn to host the prime meridian.

What better location for the world’s prime meridian than the historically highest navigable point on the American Nile? The Mississippi River is known throughout the world. Imagine an interpretive center on Harriet Island with an atomic clock and a massive Paul Manship sundial.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea will cause people to look at and think about the world differently. It will literally change the world, or at least our perspective of it. It is like the US Post office moving only two blocks in downtown Saint Paul but changing my PO Box; I stayed where I was but my address changed.

US satellites control the world’s GPS system. All we have to do is lobby Congress and the President to make the change and when decided they just have to throw a switch.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea is a tremendous educational opportunity to teach geography, history, cartography, and astronomy to the citizens of Saint Paul and the nation. It is also a promotional opportunity to publicize the reasons Saint Paul deserves to host the prime meridian.

Promoting the notion of relocating the prime meridian will cause people to think differently about Saint Paul and the world. And when successful (after lobbying and marketing) just imagine: Saint Paul, where time begins!

Sustainability

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

As this idea gets traction we may find ourselves competing with other communities for the prime meridian. Many communities may begin to regard themselves as the center of the universe. The very effort to relocate the prime meridian will put Saint Paul on the map and in the history books. And when successful, people the world over will set their clocks by Saint Paul Mean Time.
