Flags and Pageantry in St Paul

Summary:

On a recent trip to Italy, we were fortunate to witness the magnificent pageantry of the Palio di Siena, a festival of medieval splendor. This experience created the genesis of an idea for honoring the communities that together create our city. The Palio celebrates the unique identity of the many neighborhoods of Siena first and most beautifully by the display of unique flags for each neighborhood. In this way, I propose to create perhaps 10 neighborhoods that would comprise St. Paul, each with a different history/geography or whatever makes it unique. For example, one neighborhood might be "The Birthplace of St. Paul". Artists would be commissioned to design flags for each neighborhood and these flags could be the symbols of the many communities within St Paul. They could be displayed at parades, community festivals, and most importantly, people's homes. I would see a real sense of neighborhood and community pride develop from this concept.I would envision, for example, a beautiful display of community flags, each proudly carried by St Paul citizens within that neighborhood. Out of many, one. A beautiful and unifying concept that can grow and grow. This concept could be further developed into neighborhood competitions (friendly, of course and for good causes)athletic events, research projects for school children on their particular neighborhood, community events. The possibilities are many and varied and would allow for endless opportunities for community building.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea is particularly unique in that it would allow EVERYONE in St Paul to participate by displaying their neighborhood flag. I think this idea would also create a real feeling of community and pride in our neighborhoods. St Paul, I believe, is known for its livability and we should celebrate this!

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I will return to the statement, "out of many, one." By celebrating the unique characteristics of each and every neighborhood, we celebrate together that we are all citizens of St Paul. Can you envision the 4th of July in St Paul, where everyone flies not only the American flag, but the flag that represents their St Paul neighborhood as well? I can see that and it's a beautiful thing!

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The visual impact of the flag is a powerful one. And how much more so when a flag represents the neighborhood we live in and love. This is an idea that could be replicated all over the country. On that trip to Italy, we stopped a flag-draped little boy in the neighborhood he lived in and asked his father if we could take his picture. The dad was so proud as we snapped that photo and its a treasured memory for us of the community spirit of that place. We could have that here.
