Summary:

Make St. Paul, the first city in the nation to become Dementia Friendly! My vision includes awareness and education, but also brings into play a smart branding plan for businesses and communities, making it a win-win for everyone. We can create a fiscally responsible and empowering Dementia Friendly campaign with your help. One which works collaboratively with intergenerational and multi-cultured participants. One which leverages technology and compassion to make a difference to shift our dementia care culture. Multiple platforms are in place for this campaign. Each has a large knowledge base. The established platforms are:

1) An interactive radio show dedicated to dementia and caregiving
2) An interactive webinar series featuring those living with early dementia
3) Multiple educational programs,
4) A blog with an extended knowledge base,
5) A variety of social media platforms,
6) A collaborative resource directory for a “Whole life” approach to living well with dementia
7) Several FREE tools.

The above list, contributed to Alzheimer’s Speaks being recognized as “The #1 Influencer Online for Alzheimer’s” by Sharecare and Dr. Oz. This was phenomenal, given Alzheimer’s Speaks is only one person with a passion, who has not utilized search engine optimization and has no marketing budget. The Dementia Friendly campaign structure is in place. By expanding Alzheimer’s Speaks workforce, St. Paul would be the first Dementia Friendly city in the nation. This would guarantee St. Paul being acknowledged as a leader, given a new person develops dementia every 68 seconds.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The unexpected outcome is utilizing our platforms makes it easier to remove the stigmas and myths attached to dementia. Each fosters a transition in becoming Dementia Friendly. People crave information to educate and support them in a fashion that allows them to live with the disease, not as it.
Alzheimer’s Speaks has a proven track record connecting people in all areas of life to resources and information. By giving hope perceptions are shifted. We are able to build unity through community. The UK is leading the Dementia Friendly campaign. Our design allows us to surpass their outcomes and benefits.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are one of the hottest topics and greatest needs in our nation. I can confidently say all eyes will be on St. Paul for making a commitment to be the first Dementia Friendly city in the United States. Here are just a few things that being known as “Dementia Friendly” will do for St. Paul:

• Supporting companies and neighborhoods to enable stronger work forces and communities.

• Educating businesses, communities, schools and individuals to heighten awareness.

• A compassionate city that appreciates, understands and supplies resources.

• Creating an inclusive and accepting environment to travel to.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Remember dementia is a disease of society, not of one. The Dementia Friendly campaign helps people feel connected and included instead of the isolation that usually accompanies dementia.

The Dementia Friendly Campaign inspires people to have safe, open and honest conversations. One can witness these conversations and actions at Arthur’s Memory Café,in Roseville, Minnesota and on our other platforms. Arthur’s is the first UK social support group in the US for those dealing with dementia. Being sustainable is possible, because people will be motivated to make a difference to help others when there are engaging platforms available to them.
