Traveling sculptures

Summary:

I would propose establishing an annual public sculpture contest in which local artists would contribute a design of their choice (sketched draft) to a local arts panel. The panel would select the top 20 artist's designs to receive a grant to help fund the material costs for the sculpture, local workspace, and professional instruction/assistance with their design. Completed sculptures would then be placed on display (Rice Park) for public viewing. The public would be able to vote on their top three choices (finalists), which would earn each artist a small monetary award. All sculptures would also be involved in an online silent auction to benefit local arts programs and promote increased art awareness as well as other similar arts projects in the future.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I think this would be an innovative means to both promote and cultivate the local arts scene in St. Paul by providing the means and support for local artists, as well as exposing and involving the general public to a "hands on" experience involving the local arts scene.

This Entry is about (Issues)

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The impact of such a program would fit "hand in glove" with the local arts scene in the City of St. Paul. Rice Park would provide the perfect backdrop for displaying these works of art for public viewing. The idea of creating a contest and a support system for the artists would allow many artists the ability to work on a project they might not previously have had the means of creating. Also, the public involvement would be an integral part of choosing which artist's works became finalists.

Sustainability

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The whole idea of an annual sculpture contest is just the beginning. Many other similar programs/contests could become a part of this program, which could provide local artists with a myriad of opportunities to explore their craft with program funded assistance. All monetary gain achieved from the online auction of the works of art would be returned to fund future art programs in St. Paul.
