Summary:

In an effort to breach the educational gaps between segments of our population, an literacy center is essential. The center would provide a safe learning environments for adults of all backgrounds, and would work with already existing organizations to provide education in the following areas: ESL for English learners, GED classes, computer skill classes, financial literacy classes, resume writing, education funding (how to apply for grants and scholarships), intermediary classes (step after GED and in prep for college), etc. This center would be beneficial to the entire community for multiple reasons: 1) it would breach the educational gap between traditional Minnesotans and new immigrant populations; 2) it will aid parents (from all backgrounds) in providing their school children with help in school work, college application, scholarship and grants, etc; 3) it will encourage adults to pursue higher education 4)it will prepare adults for higher education 5)it will breach the gap between the current employee pool and the qualifications for current jobs 6) it will prepare adults for the demands of the ever changing work place. This center will contract with existing non-profits to provide classes within the center in their area of expertise. The center will be a resource to the entire community and encourage community activism by allowing people to volunteer their time to teach a class and help those in need of the resources offered. Additionally, it will offer a safe haven where all the colorful cultures of St. Paul can interact and grow together. By ensuring each Minnesotan has a chance to succeed, St. Paul as a whole will move forward and prosper.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

It address a growing problem from the root. It is not enough to focus on the education of youth, because if such youth do not have the academic help they need from their families, they are less likely to succeed. My idea empowers adults to take steps to better themselves and their children. My idea also address the problem of a highly competitive job market and seeks to improve the chances of the current working populations of attaining such positions. We can not as a society move forward if a large portion of our population lacks the proper skills to do so. Also, my idea will utilize existing, underutilized, community resources and encourage activism by allowing community members to actively participate in helping others.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

A adult education center will empower adults to better themselves, help their children, and prepare adults for a changing job market. The center will help breach educational gaps between new immigrant populations or traditional Minnesotans and their children; thus allowing parents to help their own children in the pursuit of higher education. In addition, the center will help the current adult population prepare and develop skills necessary for the current job market. Additionally, the center will provide a space for all the colorful cultures of St. Paul to interact and grow and provide a support system for adults facing similar challenges to face those challenges together. In short, it will educate, empower, and unite the community.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The idea serves and benefits the entire community irrespective of race, culture, economic class, etc. The knowledge gained from the education center will be put to use because each person can choose classes relevant to their needs. For example, my parents immigrated to the US in 1997 and I was enrolled in elementary school. My parents were educated and possessed enough knowledge to help me with my school work. Their skills fell short when I began to apply for colleges. They knew little about the system or the requirements, and absolutely nothing about how to fund my education (scholarships, grants, etc). They would have greatly benefited from a class in this area (for themselves if they wanted to pursue higher education, or for me).
