Summary:

Using food to strengthen the community, Saint Paul Kitchen Table will be a multi-faceted and mutually beneficial project that includes job training, meal distribution, and local farm partnerships. This won't be just any old soup kitchen, but a place where homeless, jobless, recovering addicts or incarcerated individuals can receive the rigorous job training to have a successful culinary career. The results will not only empower these individuals, but feed delicious and nutritious meals to the hungry and build communities. Furthermore, a food recycling collaboration with local farms, restaurants, and grocery stores will help turn tons of leftover, surplus food into thousands of balanced meals every day. Kitchen Table will offer sustainable solutions to some of the biggest issues in our community - poverty, hunger, and poor health. After all, food can do so much more than fill empty stomachs.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Modeled after the DC Central Kitchen, Saint Paul Kitchen Table will bring innovative solutions and social enterprise to the poor, hungry, homeless, and jobless in the Twin Cities. Unlike most shelters and soup kitchens, Kitchen Table will be more like a community center where individuals of all backgrounds, cultures, and ways of life come together to feed each others' stomachs, minds, and souls. The educated and successful will collaborate with the less fortunate to recycle good food, cook good food, and eat good food. Rather than just a band-aid fix, this will be a long-term, sustainable solution to poverty, hunger, and poor health.

The hungry will be fed with nourishing, delicious food from local farms, restaurants, and grocers. The jobless and struggling will have the opportunity to receive professional on-the-job culinary training. Food will be recycled and put to good use, instead of thrown away. Local chefs, business people, and collaborators will have the chance to use their skills and expertise for something bigger, something that truly makes a difference.
