Summary:

For over 25 years IFPMN has played a central role in the Twin Cities film and media community--offering education, youth programs, conferences, workshops, screenings, regranting opportunities and more. To keep this community strong and position Minnesota as a national leader in the creation of New Media, we propose partnering with a variety of media non-profits to create the Minnesota Media Center (MMC). The MMC will promote collaboration between entertainment, advertising and New Media industries to support the next generation of innovators and artists--offering educational programs to media makers at every stage of their careers. Components of the MMC would include affordable short- and long-term work area rentals to individuals and organizations, community workspace, conference rooms, a public café or bar, a media arts gallery, classrooms, a sound stage, post-production suites, and two 100-200 seat state-of-the-art screening rooms, which would not only present original programming, but would be St. Paul venues for existing film festivals, bringing thousands of people to St. Paul. Upon opening, the MMC will immediately establish a new and exciting media and film-focused destination spot. Participating organizations would not only be also to consolidate resources and reduce redundancies, but they would also spark the imagination and capture the attention of local, regional, and national media artists, filmmakers, and funders by their creative partnership. It would foster new projects and collaborative programs, as media artists and fans around the region would be given a vital laboratory for new ideas. The MMC will greatly benefit St. Paul and the entire Twin Cities metropolitan area by creating a destination spot for media making, education and presentations. And by creating an exciting media district, the Center has the potential to attract media and technology businesses to St. Paul. The possibilities are endless.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Non-profits are struggling int the current economic climate. By consolidating operations under one roof, we would be able to consolidate resources, eliminate redundancies, and reduce operating expenses--and raise the visibility of not only our own organizations, but the entire film and media community. By being under one roof, we would also encourage new dialog and partnerships--creating new projects and possibilities and inspiring the current and next generation of media makers. Minnesota is a national leader in many industries and the Minnesota Media Center will make it a leader in new media and technology creation and innovation.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

With the creation of the Minnesota Media Center, St. Paul will immediately become the center of film and media making in the state and region. Thousands of people will use and visit the MMC each year by attending classes, screenings, and events--and even more will come as a result of other organizations using the MMC's common spaces for their own classes and events. Talented people will be drawn to St. Paul and the projects they create will be distributed throughout the city, state, and country--further spreading the word about the state's media community, anchored in St. Paul. Youth education programs will bring a diverse and talented young constituency to St. Paul and new media and technology businesses will be drawn to the district to take advantage of the association with the MMC.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Once the Minnesota Media Center opens, it will immediately attract the attention of every artist and innovator working in film and New Media. Ongoing classes, screenings and events will ensure that thousands of people will visit the MMC annually. And use of the MMC's facilities by film festivals, arts organizations and others will only add to the MMC's visibility. Finally, with its commitment to youth programs and education, it's ensured that the next generation or artists and innovators will think of St. Paul when they imagine their next project.
