Summary:

The idea I have is to turn the West Seventh Community Center into a hub of energy innovation. The building would be updated with Solar panels energy efficient windows and heating and cooling system. The West Seventh Library is in the center. The highlight of the Innovation Center would be to reconfigure the space in the center and have a community cafe at the center. This would be a cooperative Café founded on the principles and values of Authenticity, Community, Empowerment and Exploration. The programming could be based on the Creative Arts Model. The Café would have simple but very good food that would change with the seasons and use as much locally produced food that is organic and not processed. We would have some signature Desserts like Pie that people could purchase or order for parties. The café would be imbedded in The West 7th Community Center with a Library so patrons could stop in for coffee or lunch. The Café would be set-up so all the food served and the waste products could be composted or recycled. There would be an Artist Show hung every quarter and there would be space local community members that could sell their pieces.
We would sell or market goods and services that community members would produce.
The programming would integrate the Senior and Community Kids programs as well as the Library programs. The Cafe would serve breakfast and lunch but would be a flexible space so you could have classes in cooking, painting, dance, music, yoga. There would be an Hour Car Station and a Nice Ride Station for the community to use. The gardens around the center would be converted to rain water gardens as well.•
The goal of the Café would be to provide Part-time employment to community members. There would also be Internships for anyone that wanted to learn a new skill in the food service and baking. The classes would be based on the philosophy that everyone is a Teacher and everyone is a Learner.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

My idea is different in that it integrates all the elements of a healthy vibrant community center. It offers programming across generations and uses the cafe as a center piece to do that. It also upgrades an old facility and turns it into a hub of innovation and community partnership. The philosophy and principles and values of Authenticity, Community, Empowerment and Exploration and community ownership are all integrated into this idea.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea will make a difference to St. Paul in that it will demonstrate how energy efficiency and innovation can be integrated into your community and be used as a prototype for other community centers around the city. The philosophy and cooperative nature of the cafe will bring people together to solve community challenges in a positive way. The idea of making and growing fresh food is also aa big community value that we need to foster in all generations.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I think the whole idea is to inspire others. Community members would be asked to come and share there ideas at regular forums. The cafe would have weekly questions at the tables to keep the ideas flowing. The philosophy that everyone is a teacher and everyone is a learner would be imbeded in the center.
