A Thousand Apprenticeships

Summary:

Students of St Paul once had access to a program called St Paul Connections where students could take classes for $1 and be exposed to many different types of careers. This program no longer exists and there are very few opportunities for students to learn about what happens on a job. I think young people from ages 12-25 need to have a lot more exposure to career choices and options. Cristo Rey is a high school in Minneapolis where students go to school for 4 days and one day week work at an internship to prepare them for the world of work. What I propose is that a program is developed to provide experiential learning experiences for young people in every industry and career pathway through mentoring, community service, one day adventures, and internships (even if only for a week). Students would be placed in cohorts and go through an orientation as well as online modules about workforce readiness. To develop this system, I would develop partnerships with area businesses, government and community organizations. St Paul Public Schools, private and charter schools would have to be involved to implement release time for students to explore a variety of opportunities so that they can make better choices about post secondary options and finding a career. The emerging workforce will looks didfferint than the current work force and this can help with the transitions. I would also recruit an advisory board of representatives from each of the six career pathways and from the student body of both public and charter schools to develop the plan. This idea can be sustained by buy in from industry leaders and commitment to funding from the companies in the career pathways as well as developing summer internships for students.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This is a proactive approach to thinking about an emerging workforce that is smaller and demographically different than the current workforce that will ensure more job satisfaction and move towards helping youth to create a stable position for themselves in the workforce. It also will affect the number of families currently living in poverty in St Paul.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

More young people will see options outside of what their parents or people in their community do for employment as well as increase the likelihood of them staying in St Paul.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Many studies currently show that young people are not workforce ready. Having students have options to try out will impact their ability to think creatively about the job market and help them to be more engaged in learning.
