City of Languages
Summary:
The St. Paul Public Schools indicates that there are over 100 languages that its students speak at home. This is incredible, but instead of seeing this a language gap, let's turn this asset into community development opportunities, and income generation for the city? Let's create a language bank where St. Paul residents can register the languages that they are fluent in, provide training to native speakers so that they are qualified to provide translations and interpreting, and create a business so that St. Paul can be the language provider for the rest of Minnesota.

Innovation
What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
Title VI requires language access but the reality is that this area is severely underfunded and many community-based organizations and the private sector has tried to fill in the gap. We have the languages, the people, and the business models to build this language bank to scale. Scaling it could also drive quality by improving training for the interpreters/translators, and it could result in St. Paul leading the nation in terms of becoming a language center.
