Summary:

Purpose of this project: TO revive St.Paul's reputation as a city that fosters the challenge to excellence in the arts, we would use the grant to resurrect and restore a world-class chamber orchestra in St.Paul and distinguish St.Paul, once again, as the home of this country's only resident professional chamber orchestra. The grant would seed a new organization to:

1. administer the routine operation of the orchestra
2. pay the musicians' salaries competitive with other orchestras and commensurate with tier skill and experience
3. restore a position of music director
4. engage in a capitol campaign to ensure the orchestra's financial sustainability

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The creation of a new host (and a new name) for an established ensemble is significant because it provides a new structural model for the sponsorship of a non-profit arts organization. It is a model defined by a musician-centered ethic and fueled by an audience engaged in the leadership and operation of the musical experience.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

1. St.Paul will, once again, offer its community of citizens the opportunity to experience live orchestral performance on the highest level available anywhere;

2. St.Paul will burnish its reputation as a community that can collectively marshal its citizens to protect what is most valuable.

Sustainability

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The revival of an orchestra that is "OURS" will generate the memory of its resurrection with each performance. That ordinary people working together can create a new solution for a conventional problem is a demonstrable precedent that can be transported to other cities facing a critical challenge to its artistic life. It becomes a new model.
