Bridging Generations

Summary:

When my kids were small, a few houses in our neighborhood had signs in the front window -- McGruff House -- to show kids this was a safe place to come if they needed help. We need help now building strong bridges between the different generations and cultures in St. Paul. Developing a neighborhood-based program to foster those relationships within and between neighborhoods, putting signs in windows to mark participants, then having an annual city-wide competition highlighting great, creative work would foster the bridge-building we so badly need. We could have scavenger hunts for kids -- where they have to knock on doors and gather stories of the bridges built and friendships made. The teens working for SPNN and ThreeSixty Journalism could share these with neighborhood newspapers and cable TV. The city could host a partnership walk, where new buddies from different generations and neighborhoods would walk together and share their stories of what they've done together for their city.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

It encourages people to connect across the borders of culture, age and neighborhood, to recognize their participation with a public emblem (the Bridging St. Paul sign in the window) and a public walk, to collect and share those stories with the wider community.

This Entry is about (Issues)

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

It will help connect different neighborhoods and generations and make a visible, public statement claiming these connections. It would encourage existing programs that serve specific neighborhoods or demographic groups to link to other groups serving a different clientele.

Sustainability

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This one is little like passing a flame from candle to candle in a dark room. When I see several of my neighbors with Bridging St. Paul signs in their windows, I get curious. Then, I want to get involved and earn my own sign.
