Summary:

Traditional Sports at Park and Recreational Facilities
I am interested in being a part of the “Saint Paul Foundation’s Forever Saint Paul Challenge” because I believe I can do more. As a community member for the last 28 years living in and around our Capitol City I believe I can do more. There are many ideas and things I can share, but one that is very dear to me is the Park & Recreational Programs. I grew up playing volleyball, soccer and takraw (kato) indoor; and I have always enjoyed watching baseball, softball, football and hockey program around all Park & Recreational programming and facilities, but I would really like to do more. I would like to provide programming to include other recreational and amateur sport programs that reflect the communities that we all live in currently.
Rather than the City focus on each one of the neighborhood in its Park & Rec facilities community members will be invited to propose for consideration to receive additional funding from this pool of winning dollars to upgrade the individual facility to meet the current needs of the community. Thus the fund will be manage by both the Park & Rec and members of the community’s. Identified recreational as well as competitive youth sports that the Park & Rec had not been able to provide are: outdoor field for the sport of Takraw (kato), outdoor surface for volleyball, more Frisbee or disc parks, designated cricket field and program, outdoor surface for top spinning and soccer specific turf field.
The participants may not be living in that part of Saint Paul, but to have such diversity drawn into the particular neighborhood would be ideal; and, yes, there will be issues surrounding inappropriate behavior, drugs, alcohol, gangs, and others, but with specific instruction of care provided prior to using such updated facility should help out in minimizing or managing such behaviors.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

My one and only choice in choosing an agency to help receive and manage the fund shall I be so lucky to win is the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center: Neighborhood House because this is one center that had hosted many of the traditional sport and recreational activities. Small proceeds will be contributed to the Constance Curry Scholarship fund to entice potential volunteers to help manage such traditional sports and activities implemented.
When upon implementing our park & rec facilities will be filled with people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds in providing and utilizing the recreational activities of choices.
