Empowering Parents

Summary:

To strengthen and make St. Paul great, I am proposing that we provide parent education using a "pyramid scheme" so the efforts of schools, churches and community are enhanced. This educational component will be provided free of charge and include personal empowerment concepts, emotional intelligence enhancement, human development understanding, and problem solving and networking skill enhancement. We will use a "train the trainer" model to train a group of parents to deliver this training and who would at the same time, train additional parents to carry on the work so it would be self-sustaining. This will enhance early childhood education as parents will learn how to assist their children in their emotional, physical, cognitive development. The focus will be on parents of preschool age children. There is nothing better than helping parents understand the phases and stages that children go through so they can deal with these as natural rather than frustrating. Children spend the majority of their time outside of school situations, so we would spend our time assisting in making the time at home more educational and developmentally appropriate. A flexible schedule and a variety of locations would be utilized to ensure the availablility of this training throughout the St. Paul community.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

We will be training parents to be better parents and then using these parents to train additional ones. The curriculum will be a combination of concepts that are related but have not normally been included in one program for parent education: emotionalal intelligence, child development, and personal empowerment. Additional training could be added based on desires of the parents.

This Entry is about (Issues)

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This idea will have long lasting results by improving the lives of young children through having educated parents sensitive to their development levels and knowledgeable of ways to enhance their skill level in all areas of development. This will even the playing field for children when they are entering school and eliminate some of the "remedial" efforts that are now used and needed.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

This is a very replicable idea and could be used in any community. I believe we would see results in school attendance and achievement as well as more parental involvement in childrens' school experiences throughout their elementary years. I believe this would be a community enriching experience for participants as parents become more familiar with their neighbors and other parents.
