Summary:

First, get a competition between architectural firms and architectural students within the city of Saint Paul. Three prizes awarded. The challenge will be to design a home that would be sustainable, inexpensive and be below $125,000 and to build without a garage. That would be a home that could be for the people in the ABC part of their life and that would be in the XYZ part of the life. In other words, people who are beginning their homeownership part of their life and ending their homeownership life. This would be a forever home, because it would be designed in such a way that would allow people at the end of their life and their caregivers to live comfortably together and people at the beginning of their lives with children, or someone to care for. They would be able to be built in such a way that they would be passed on and renovated and that is the true ability to make housing sustainable for a hundred years that is designed for a ability to renovate and update. Now the second piece of the idea is that the houses will be sold. The competition with be between the architects's design. Three lots within the city of Saint Paul, in different parts, would be designated for the homes to be built. Those homes will then be auctioned off for a certain amount of money. Those homes for the first sale will then be used to fund the next round of affordable homes within Saint Paul. The housing plans are also revenue because you would be able to sell the plans. You create a self-sustaining culture by building houses to the newest plans. Each round of building and selling supports the build of the next three houses with design and technology upgrade in each round.

It will build civic endangerment at many levels. The levels are competition, design build, and it will improve quality of neighborhoods. This idea will allow the journey of homeownership to begin and end with dignity. It will provide an ongoing model for other cities with aging housing stock. And it'll be a model, a self-sustaining model, because the sale of the houses will be used to build and improve the next round of houses. It will go on forever if people take care of their houses, participate in the architectural competition and sales of houses.
