Community Engagement through Film

Summary:

Film, one of the most democratic and influential of art forms, can introduce audience members to new cultures, brings awareness to international injustices, and dispels deep-seated stereotypes. Further, it brings people from all walks of life together to share a communal experience, a rarity in our increasingly digital age.

I propose to give the people of St. Paul wider access to independent, local, national, and international films, by ensuring that The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul’s year-round programs have a strong presence in St. Paul, and that the Film Society’s MSP International Film Festival, which presents 200 new independent films from 60+ countries each year, also becomes a fixture on the St. Paul map. Although the Film Society and the Festival have occasionally ventured to theaters in St. Paul, they have not to date had the resources to fully expand into that second city, currently presenting the entirety of their films at the St. Anthony Main Theatre in Minneapolis, greatly narrowing their ability to share their remarkable films with the broadest possible of audiences.

The films presented by the Film Society provide insight into cultures – both local and international, historic and contemporary and a strong community has formed around its influence.

A one million dollar grant would allow the Film Society to expand its role and establish a year-round presence in St. Paul, providing residents of St. Paul with access to meaningful, thought-provoking films, and a tremendous opportunity to create a new cultural and artistic community in St. Paul.

Community Engagement through Film

Give us the highlights of your idea for making Saint Paul great (2,000 characters maximum or approx. 250 words)

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The idea of a film as catalyst for community interaction, since it is most often these days thought of simply through the framework of entertainment. Independent and international films are often excluded from standard commercial movie theaters, due to the perception that independent cinema has a limited audience. The success of the Film Society over its fifty years has not only disproven this idea, but its centerpiece event, the annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, has shown that people really embrace the experience of coming together to view movies and discussing and debating the presented ideas, viewpoints and cultures.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

By giving the Film Society the ability to work with local theaters in St. Paul, the city will expose its residents to a range of cultural and artistic films. The films and festivals presented by the Film Society have the ability to bring different groups together in a way that will strengthen the cultural diversity of St. Paul through participation, provide the basis for a deep sense of artistic community and engender community engagement.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Powerful and stimulating experiences leave imprints in our minds. High quality, independent film can create that experience. But beyond didactic content, film brings people together in a harmonious way that invites an opportunity for lasting connections through a shared experience. As people from communities within and surrounding St. Paul visit the local theatres for screen film, the camaraderie experienced will hopefully inspire them to engage with neighbors and acquaintances in their own community.
