Flash Mob Saint Paul

Peace, Health, Clarity

Summary:

An ongoing calendar of intermittent flash mob (FM) gatherings intended to promote peace (internal and external), health, clarity of vision and balance. FM is more about activities that anyone can attend than a particular site. Scheduled throughout St. Paul at quasi-predetermined intervals (delivery of schedule would need to follow some form), indoors or outdoors, roving FM activities could include gatherings for yoga, meditation, gardening/weeding a public park or for someone in need, poetry exchanges, garbage pick up, music, fixing kids’ bikes etc. (Think of people in China collectively practicing Tai Chi in a plaza.)
Unstructured, free, and for anyone, FM is a way for participants to spontaneously leave computers/technology for a few minutes. FM events could take place in parks, the Zoo, church lawns, nursing homes, hospitals, parking lots, or animal shelters with the emphasis on doing something positive/good not only for self but for others. FM could serve a range of people such as those: having a bad day (at work) but who could take a break to gain balance; grieving for a lost loved one; or providing diversion for shut-ins. FM would also improve the local environment or personal health. FB would be intended zero-waste events, promote health and peace in the participants, and improve the quality of the site/or the health of the observers. While not anti-technology – smart phones will certainly be part of the FB scheduling process – FM’s would promote balance in the participant’s lives and the lives of others.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

FM Saint Paul provides a spontaneous and unstructured way of encouraging self and others to improve quality of life in Saint Paul. It is about flexibility and a range of ideas and activities not tied to any one organization, event or site/neighborhood. FM Saint Paul will have a fluidity about it that will promote creativity and positive change in people’s lives that are highly regulated. As zero-waste events they will be sustainable. They will be as innovative as the initiators and participants.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

People generally remember doing something positive for themselves and for others. Thus they often want to do more or repeat. In the process, FM participants might learn something (yoga, plant identification), help others, create positive change, and meet new like-minded people. There is agency in doing something positive – improving the life of others or their surroundings. Unstructured, FM participants do not have to attend a sequence or rigid schedule of FM actions, only what they chose. It is in the social agency of flexibility and creativity that FM Saint Paul will work.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

FM Saint Paul is about activity that can be recreated and altered that effects the lives of others as well as of participants. This is a sort of Public Interest Design activity, a social design activity, that can continue to evolve depending on site, season, particular activity and participants. It allows participants to do something positive and effect change.
