Minnesota Public Art
Summary:
With a million dollars I would fund the creation of Minnesota Public Art to solidify Saint Paul as a Great City. Every Great City is seen through its public art so it is true that Saint Paul as a great city must provide the framework to design, produce, manage, restore, and administrate quality public art. Public art by the people for the people would be organized upon workshops led by master craftsmen and artists working with apprentices to create and place public art through the great city of St. Paul.
Minnesota Public Art is innovative as it engages a proven yet largely forgotten practice of workshops developing and creating art but it actively and economically engages people who live and work in neighborhoods to beauty, commemorate and provide meaning for community where they live. The impact of significant creations of public art can be found in Paris via the Eiffel Tower, in China’s Great Wall, and Minnesota Public Art would brand Saint Paul to be known for its dynamic collection of public works created by artisans, architects, and engineers from the local community.
Both innovative and impact is to put people back to work in the spirit of the Works Progress Administration where young apprentices in after school work programs would develop skills and abilities via knowledge imparted through master artists and community art liaisons. The program would instill transferable skills to restore public works and sustain via effective administrative services as it promotes excellence in public art and civic life. This idea is largely sustainable through philanthropic contributions from areas such as workforce development, arts grants, community development grants, restoration grants, with revenue from the sales of public and increased tourism to St. Paul.

Innovation
What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
Employ Minnesotans to design, create, maintain, and restore public art for their community. Minnesota Public Art is different as it looks to the past of how art for the urban landscape was developed through workshops yet values the knowledge of artisans and craftsmen as cultural treasures and provides a cross-generational conduit that imparts knowledge via a crystalline vision of humanity.
Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
Minnesota Public Art will make a difference in St. Paul's landscape as it provides a framework to support creativity while heralding history of the region through the practices of supporting and defining a "Just Community", public art by the people for the people. Minnesota Public Art not only creates and manages yet it restores and maintains public art as significant cultural forms.
Sustainability
Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
Minnesota Public Art will employ youth and adults alike. In addition to work opportunities it will beautify the urban landscape physically while it celebrates its history by connecting people who live and work to participate in making art as their legacy and contribution to civic life.
Minnesota Public Art is a sustainable model and this alone will inspire others to create shared meanings and cultural forms as it promotes a just community. Great cities such as Chicago, London, and Sydney understand that through the eyes of history all great civilizations are viewed through their public art. Cross generational economic development creating and maintaining public art will do what art does best provide meaning to community life through forms of shared meaning.
