Making St. Paul An Alt Energy Champion

Summary:

My idea is to have St. Paul continue champion renewable energy through projects that would place solar panels, for example, on more public buildings such as libraries, schools, athletic facilities and college campuses. Some of these efforts are underway, but mainly in the downtown area. I want to spread to the neighborhoods, get unions involved in installations and allow for community solar -- where neighbors can own panels that are located on public buildings.

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

My idea builds on efforts underway to make St. Paul greener. But I want to spread the movement into neighborhoods and invite community members to participate in what could be a public private partnership. As other forms of distributed energy come online, the city and its neighborhoods could incorporate them. We can start with solar and move on from there.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

It will potentially create more good paying jobs, create a greater awareness for renewable energy, offer a larger number of people a way to participate in solar and other energy projects without at a cost much less than what is required today.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

I would like this to first be installed on the St. Paul Public Library in Highland Park, the city's second busiest library. I want to invite community members to buy solar panels and then, in return, get a dividend on their energy bills. With one example successfully completed, other neighborhoods would see the results and perhaps try their own projects.
