Central Garden District

Summary:

This proposal is to define, through greening methods, some of the primary entrances into the central core of the city, and provide a visual continuity that strengthens the fabric of the built environment of downtown St. Paul. It will improve walk-ability and way finding, and encourage new or increased activity in several parks, and establish connections to the river.

Through the creation of new or renovation of existing green spaces, “green walls” on parking ramps and other visual installations utilizing plant materials, downtown as a whole will be more firmly stitched together. As a coordinated, designed effort, this project will bring about increased human interactions through its enjoyment, and act as innovative place-making. Executing this project gives the City of St. Paul an opportunity to promote the enjoyment of creative and inviting green spaces, connected to and complementing the natural environment.

With improvements in public transport and the decreased need for public parking, ramp roof tops will be transformed into urban agricultural oases. A fully integrated food web will be established through composting, gardening, and animal husbandry. Produce and value added products will be consumed locally.

The design and construction of this project will be led by a Landscape Gardener and Artist in Residence, with appropriate professional and community input.

Innovation: This project melds green infrastructure and public art together in a way that is transformative both visually and functionally. Not simply a beautification project or a gardening exercise, the CGD introduces tools to help develop a holistic and sophisticated social structure.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

As a walking destination, the CGD will draw leisure and entertainment seekers to a welcoming atmosphere. It will attract new businesses to move into a much improved streetscape, and will encourage residents to spend locally. The CGD will complement the reshaping of the Central Business District into a residential zone. Gateway entrances will calm traffic, improving pedestrian safety.

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

The activity this project creates is inherently sustainable. There are already leadership structures in place on the City and State level to initiate implementation.
