Peace/Piece Art
Summary:
We would like to encourage the people of St. Paul, to do their part in promoting peace by bringing in their "piece," no questions asked so that we can melt them down and create a sculpture of peace, designed by a local artist. Sey-Tu? In addition, for those who have never owned one, we can do our part by collecting trash across the city, and turning that into an art sculpture as well. We don't know an artist who would do this, but we've seen it somewhere?

Innovation
What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
We heard about it on NPR, and so we thought what a great idea for Saint Paul. My students and I are attending a forum on Gun Violence Prevention with the St. Paul Rotary Club tomorrow morning. The students will be video-taping the forum, and creating a video for the rotary club to put on the internet. It all seems like perfect timing due to the happenings in this country. The gun injuries and deaths are no where near those of places like Chicago or Detroit, but why wait until they are?

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
I think it will make a difference because it will bring more awareness to the growing gun violence in our city. We want to touch the hearts and characters of those who wield them as weapons, while waking up those who think it isn't an issue. It will make our city a little bit safer, while providing a beautiful, visual reminder to everyone, that we want the city of Saint Paul to be a safe place. I hope it will bring people together as they feel safer to hang out, interact, and feel safe to be a community in all of Saint Paul, not just East side, West side, Frog Town, etc. The community work to make this project happen is a wonderful way to get people talking, interacting, and celebrating a cleaner and safer city.
Sustainability
Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)
Hopefully there will be a visible difference in the cleanliness of the city because of this project, and a visual reminder to all to keep it that way. With that much garbage, all across Saint Paul, being picked up off of the streets, we should be able to make multiple sculptures, as reminders all over the city.
