The St. Paul Center for the Arts

Summary:

Executive Summary: The creation of the St. Paul Center for the Arts reasserts the cultural significance of the Minnesota Museum of American Art, meets several community needs, and leverages existing or new assets to help drive the local and regional creative economy. It creates a community focused engine to advance the concept of the capital city as a leading edge, where culture and commerce are based. It is the logical next step for St. Paul to advance in its national influence, furthering its claim as both a livable and world class city.
Our proposal is to initiate the planning, design, and fundraising for the establishment of The St. Paul Center for the Arts (SPCA).
Located in the former Macy’s building, the former West Publishing/Ramsey County Jail buildings, or the former US Post office, The SPCA will host the Minnesota Museum of American Art, the College of Visual Art, the St. Paul College Culinary Arts Program (including roof top and green wall crop production), and the Art and Design Studio, a multidisciplinary art making and learning facility.
SPCA will contain state-of-the-art studios for fine and craft artists and designers, which will serve the public through classes, workshops, and continuing education programs. Studios containing specialized equipment will allow artists to work with various materials, including wood, metal, clay, glass, fiber, as well as paper. Multidisciplinary interaction will encourage artists to create quality, high-level work. Adult day and children’s programs will maximize the investment and create a rich and diverse mix of people using the facility.
