Six Simple Things

Building a movement to strengthen our community by strengthening our students and schools

Summary:

My million dollar idea makes Saint Paul even greater by creating a movement called “Six Simple Things” everyone can to do to strengthen our students, schools and community. It builds on founding commitments of the Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation (SPPSF): champion support for public education; facilitate partnerships with the community; fund innovative projects; and celebrate the success of students, schools, and the school district. Six Simple Things creates an infrastructure for everyone in Saint Paul to accept and act upon the challenge. Here’s how it works:

Focus on the Bright Spots – It begins by focusing on the positive, not the deficits in our students and schools and highlight great stories of kids and teachers and schools that are succeeding.

Build an online interactive tool to facilitate connections between Saint Paul residents, businesses, and our schools. The tool utilizes technology to offer ways for individuals, groups or businesses to “shop” for opportunities to give or volunteer. Think Kickstarter or Kiva that showcase projects and provide easy ways to support ideas of interest. Six Simple Things builds on the role of the SPPSF and offers a tangible opportunity to give time, talent and financial support. It goes beyond Give MN and helps make it both a philanthropic and consumer experience.

Then what?
• Use the tool to be a connector
• Engage media partners – MPR, Pioneer Press
• PR Campaign to challenge the community to get involved
• Traveling exhibit/event presence
• Go social and brand as a new model for giving
• Fun annual awards celebrations

What makes your idea different or unexpected? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

My idea is different because it takes what SPPSF is doing to a completely new level. It offers easy, interesting and social ways to build a social network both support our schools and our students with financial and human capital, and fosters a stronger community -- and we’ll have fun doing it.

Six Simple Things creates a new model of giving and getting involved in our community. It will have an interactive booth (think Food Truck type vehicle that may even sell Six Simple items that benefit schools) with videos and touch screen map to shop for different schools and categories to support.

How will your idea make a difference in Saint Paul? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Saint Paul is on a scale that is possible to make a difference. We know what we need to do. We have the infrastructure - the schools (not too many), the colleges (plenty of them) and the business community. This has the essential ingredients for managing complex change: Vision, Skills, Incentives, Resources, Action Plan. We can do this!

By using testimonials and social media, the movement will inspire others to act when they see examples (example: My 7 year-old son read The Giving Tree to his little brother’s daycare class last week. Put things like that on facebook and watch the movement spread!)

Sustainability

Why do you think people will recognize or remember your idea after it comes to life? How might it inspire others to do something similar in their community? (4000 characters maximum or approx. 500 words)

Not only is the Six Simple Things replicable, it is sustainable because it can also encompass many, many new and ongoing ideas that will last well into the future. In fact, although I’ve chosen to focus on building an idea that would help Saint Paul Schools, this idea could be expanded to all of Saint Paul and be a next step for the Forever Saint Paul Challenge.
