FOOD ON THE MOVE

Summary:

We have book mobiles and blood mobiles why not a food mobile. It would be a home ec classroom on wheels that could visit elementary and middle schools during the school year and community events during the summer and on weekends. It could partner with the Farm to School program, local farmers, chefs and culinary students. Students could earn an opportunity to visit the food mobile and learn how to make healthy and delicious fresh food as a reward for physical activity OR it could be available to all students.

The business community would have to be involved to get the food mobile rolling. Maybe a portion of the $15,000 could buy a used RV at an auction. There might be a local business or two that would donate slightly damaged appliances. A number of restaurants are closed on Mondays maybe the chef/owners would be guest teachers for future customers. Culinary students could volunteer for credit. Farmers might be happy to share some of their bounty too.

We need to educate and inspire children while they are young. By the time they are teens it is almost too late. Birthdays are no longer celebrated at local schools because of obesity. Let's find a way to celebrate fresh and healthy food in our communities so that our children can live long and healthy lives.

Let's find a way to celebrate fresh and healthy food in our communities so that our children can live long and healthy lives.

How do you define your "community"?

(e.g. your school, your neighborhood, church, book club, etc.) Southwest Minneapolis- a forward thinking neighborhood where families are trying to live as healthy and GREEN as possible.

Tell us how you think the issue of obesity is affecting your community

Obesity is not as prevalent in our community as others in Minneapolis but it still affects us. Aside from the health accompanying health issues being overweight as a kid or adult is no fun.

Why should your idea be selected?

My idea is educational, inspirational and fun. Everyone loves a field trip and this one comes to you. Not everyone has the time to run 5 miles or the money to join a health club but everyone needs to eat. Let's give them the recipes for a healthy life.
