Welcome to Day One of the Minnesota Idea Open. Over the coming days we hope you will participate and invite friends to engage in a solution-oriented conversation. Each of the first days I’ll post a thought or question meant to stimulate ideas about possible solutions….but in no way do these posts limit the realm of ideas. They are just conversation starters.

When we look at the rapid increase of obesity, we know it is not a genetic problem – it’s caused by something that changed in our society, in the environment we live, and choices individuals make. Someone makes choices about food ingredients, menus, pricing for groceries, etc. What choices can we create to make eating smart easy?

Entertainment Food:
We love our entertainment. But when did entertainment get equated with just junk food? This week msnbc.com reported an Associated Press story stating: “Michael Lynton, chairman and chief executive officer for Sony, told theater owners at their annual ShoWest convention that a survey by the studio at 26 U.S. theaters found that two-thirds of moviegoers said they would be likely to buy healthy concessions if available.

The survey also found that 60 percent of parents thought that healthier concessions would enhance the moviegoing experience and that 42 percent of parents would buy concessions at theaters more often if healthier choices were offered, Lynton said.”

What entertainment food choices can you change?

It might be against the rules...

Self disclosure: I'm all about sneaking snacks into the movie theater! I make my own popcorn and hide it in my bag. Yes, it makes me cheap, but more importantly I it means I can have a healthy snack!

Healthier entertainment food options

Dried fruit and nuts would make for a great movie-going snack. I'd also love to see sports stadiums offer healthier alternatives to hot dogs and nachos. How about a veggie dog or turkey dog option?

Until the industry changes, I'm sticking with Mandy's tactic and sneaking in my own healthy snacks!

Change the menu

Julie,
You said "until the industry changes..." Let's change the industry. That's what this contest is about - citizens coming up with solutions to change the status quo.

Maybe we can find someone who has insights on how to make this happen more easily.

Anyone?
