Move and Gruve

Summary:

The Gruve is small device (www.muveinc.com/gruve.asp) that measures the amount and intensity of movement. The focus of the Gruve is not just on structured exercise, it measures your movement throughout the day. After an initial week of "assessment" (just wearing it while doing regular daily activities), it comes up with a personal daily calorie goal. After the assessment, the Gruve gives you color-coded feedback throughout the day to let you know how close you are to your goal. It will even buzz you if you have been sedentary for too long!

Participants would commit to using the Gruve for a certain number of weeks and attending weekly group sessions. The weekly sessions would consist of nutrition information, exercise ideas and mind-body techniques. There is a website to accompany the Gruve which allows coaches and health professionals to see their progress. Participants would qualify for weekly prizes if they have met their goal 5 days/week. Prizes would include other self-care things such as exercise equipment, exercise clothing, massage gift certificates, etc.

Using the Gruve will help change the perception of exercise. You don't have to do 60 minutes at the gym to burn calories!

How do you define your "community"?

My community is Abbott Northwestern Hospital employees and volunteers.

Tell us how you think the issue of obesity is affecting your community

A high percentage of employees are overweight or obese. Healthcare workers need to be in good health to provide the best care for patients. We also need to be good role models for our patients!

Why should your idea be selected?

The George Institute at ANW is trying to transform healthcare by providing education and integrative therapies. We also need to change the way healthcare workers care for themselves to provide the best possible care to patients.
